It was disco fever night on Idol as the top four were mentored by none other than Barry Gibb who’s poofed hairdo and falsetto voice ruled the world in the 70’s during the disco revolution. Each contestant was given two song choices in order to shine on this night. Unfortunately in the 70’s Barry had his nuts removed so he could sing that high throughout an entire song (or album for that matter!). The contestants had to make it real instead.
Blake put the beat-box into his two songs but it didn’t seem to work for the judges as they ripped him up pretty good saying that ‘you don’t need to do that in every song, dawg!’. Probability of going home tonight: 90%
Lakisha, despite her powerful voice, just is not a disco queen. Her gospel roots come through on every song in the latter part of this competition which seems to make her less of a favorite than the first few weeks when she blew through the ‘pop’ genres. Probability of going home: 70%
Melinda sang great but, once again, and rendition of these nutless male songs that aren’t sung in falsetto are going to fall short of expectations. These songs are so ingrained into our subconscious by endless radio play and even elevators that any variance to the original seems karaoke. I love Melinda’s voice and her stage presence but disco ain’t her thing either. Probability of going home: 40%
Jordin, in my eyes, is the next great pop diva. She has the voice, the power and the charm. Plus, she’s only 17 friggin years old. Of the four finalists she clearly performed the best in this genre and even impressed Barry G. to the point that he sees her as the next great singer. But, the AI viewers are a fickle bunch with all those 9 and 10 year olds armed with cell phones on the parent’s family plan with unlimited texting. Still, the probability of Jordin going bye bye: 10%
